KOKUKY

How to play

Get closer to the jack.

Pétanque is easy to learn and hard to master. Here are the basic rules of the sport and every KOKUKY game mode.

Pétanque rules in short

  1. The jack goes first.

The jack is the small target ball, also called the cochonnet. Everyone aims at it.
  2. Then the boules.

Both sides try to get their boules closer to the jack than the opponent. You can roll close or shoot an opposing boule away.
  3. The side further away throws.

The side whose best boule is further from the jack throws next. That keeps every end close.
  4. The end finishes and scores.

When every boule has been thrown, the side with the closest boule scores one point for each boule closer than the opponent’s best boule.
  5. First to the target wins.

Ends continue until someone reaches the match target. KOKUKY solo matches usually go to seven points; a quick match is decided by one end.

Throwing in the game

Power

Pull back.

Drag your finger back. The longer the pull, the more power.

Throw

Move forward and release.

Move your finger forward and release to throw. Lift your finger while it is still pulled back to cancel.

Shot type

Choose before you throw.

Pick Standard, Roll, Shoot or Lob and adjust the spin. Each boule’s stats change how it flies and rolls.

Camera

Look and measure.

Switch cameras to see the court from above. Once the boules stop, you can measure the distances.

In Settings you can show an aiming arrow and the throw power percentage. Online and in the daily games these aids stay hidden so everyone plays on equal terms.

XP and KOKUKY points

Experience

XP

Earned from solo and online matches and the daily games. Wins and losses both count, and playing unlocks new boules.

Skill

KOKUKY points

Change only in online matches against real players. Wins raise them and losses lower them. Matches against the computer never affect them.

Boules and courts

The boule cabinet holds team boules, special boules and Champion boules. Each boule has its own weight, control, spin and roll, so your choice changes the throw.

Champion boules are earned in tournaments, for example by winning a weekend cup.

The game has five courts based on real places, such as Kaivopuisto, Hakaniemi and Hämeenpuisto. The full game unlocks them all.
